Adults Learn to Sail

Adult Dinghy Course – Start Sailing 1 & 2 – $300 per 20 hour course

Sailing a Dinghy is fun and exhilarating and this program has been developed to provide a safe, informative introduction. If your aim is to confidently control your own small boat, this is the place to start.

Starting with the essential skills and safe practice, more advanced skills and techniques are gradually introduced as students progress through the Australian Sailing Start Sailing 1 & 2 syllabus so that by the end they will be ready to start our green fleet program or just enjoy being out on the water.

Start Sailing 1 will cover:

  • preparation for sailing, including appropriate clothing
  • understanding and sourcing information about weather
  • parts of the boat
  • rigging (setting up) small sailing vessels
  • launching and returning to shore
  • tacking and sailing a short course

Start Sailing 2 will cover:

Dinghy Start Sailing 2 will cover topics such as:

  • rigging your boat for sailing
  • tying knots useful when sailing
  • performing a capsize recovery in water
  • launching small sailing vessels
  • being able to helm and crew on all points of sail
  • gybing
  • sailing a triangle course
  • use of tiller extension
  • perform a heave-to
  • understand the basic rules of sailing while racing
  • in-depth understanding of wind direction and strength and what impact that will have on your sailing adventure.

Our accredited instructors will prepare you with the relevant theoretical knowledge and, under their supervision, get you to the water to put that knowledge into practice.

Adult Keelboat Course – Start Crewing – $300 (12 hour course over one weekend)

A Keelboat Start Crewing course is the perfect start to becoming a skilled keelboat sailor. The course is Australian Sailing Accredited and instructed by qualified Australian Sailing Instructors. Start Crewing covers the basic safety, theory and practical skills involved in being a crew member on a small keelboat. 

Our Start Crewing course is conducted on our club 9.7m keelboat which is perfect for teaching and learning. We will provide you with a life jacket for your course. You will not need any special clothing for your course, however we request that you wear non-marking (or light coloured) soled shoes and make sure to bring warm clothing that you are able to get wet. On rainy or windy days it is a great idea to bring a towel and a change of clothes.

Our two-day Keelboat Programs are priced at $300 per person for members, and $395 for non-members. 

Courses are capped at 5 students and run 12 hour Two Day course  (2 x 6 hr days)

Adult Keelboat Course – Start Helming – $300 (12 hour course over one weekend)

A Keelboat Start Helming course is an introduction to helming (steering) a small keelboat. The course is Australian Sailing Accredited and instructed by qualified Australian Sailing Instructors. Start Helming covers the basic safety, theory and practical skills involved in helming a small keelboat. 

Our Start Helming course is conducted on our club 9.7m keelboat which are perfect for teaching and learning. We will provide you with a life jacket and gloves. You will not need any special clothing for your course, however we request that you wear non-marking (or light coloured) soled shoes and make sure to bring warm clothing that you are able to get wet. On rainy or windy days it is a great idea to bring a towel and a change of clothes.

Each participant will receive a theory book and a log book during the Start Crewing Course. Please remember to bring your books with you to all of your keelboat courses. You will receive a certificate of participation which may be emailed to you after the course.

We will have a lunch break each day and you are welcome to bring your own lunch or purchase lunch from our Member’s Bar. For safety reasons we are unable to take anyone on board who has consumed alcohol before or during the course.

Our two-day Keelboat Programs are priced at $300 per person for members, and $395 for non-members.

Twilight Keelboat Sailing Experience – $15 / person (members and non-members)

Discover Sailing – Experience Overview

A Discover Sailing Experience is an approximate two-hour sailing experience at the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club, an accredited Discover Sailing Centre, without the technical detail of a course, for families, friends, or work colleagues. Having the chance to use the Club’s wonderful social facilities is as much a part of the experience as is getting out on the water. The aim of a Twilight Keelboat Sailing Experience is to encourage participants to want to do more sailing at the MOFSC and possibly register for a Keelboat or Dinghy Sailing Course. The course is run by an accredited Australian Sailing Keelboat Instructor. Places are limited to 5 participants each week.

Previous Experience

This course is designed for participants who wish to begin sailing in a keelboat. Learn the basics, whilst staying relatively dry! All the equipment and gear will be provided by the Mandurah Offshore Fishing and Sailing Club. This course assumes that you have no prior knowledge of sailing but being confident on the water is desirable.

Experience Overview

This course is for participants keen to experience what keelboat sailing is about.

Who should do this course?

This is the perfect ‘taster’ for anyone who wants to discover sailing for the first time. This is the perfect introduction and can be the ideal way for you to begin your sailing journey, without having to commit to a full training course.
