Dinghy News

Hi all Sailors, Mums & Dads, Volunteers and Coaches,

A few items to attend to in this newsletter..

Firstly.  *****  Sailing Sunday 16th August *****   I have been watching the weather closely this week with fingers crossed that the forecast would improve.  Unfortunately, almost every box is crossed with the reasons that we should not sail tomorrow.  Strong winds, rain, hail and lightning are forecast for tomorrow morning.  With this in mind, it is prudent to abandon racing for tomorrow. Certainly disappointing, but necessary.  Future heats will be sailed as scheduled, although we will determine whether we will have the opportunity for a resail of the abandoned races.  Whilst the topic is on future heats, attached is an amendment for the 2020 Winter Series that moves the heat dates from Father’s Day to the 30th August.  The amendment is also posted on the MOFSC website.  It would be a great day tomorrow to go down the club and have a nice hot lunch & a few drinks with friends.

The last heats in our Winter Series on  2nd August went well, with light conditions, although a large swell.  Again, we had a great dinghy turnout, with 19 dinghies sailing.  It is such a treat to see the large turnout this Winter Series, and the competition is strong across the Junior and Senior fleets.  At the briefing, we discussed the possibility of conducting a re-sail of heat 4 if the conditions were suitable.  With thanks to race control, we were able to sneak a third heat on the day.  At the end of the days racing I was able to put myself in a position where I needed assistance from one of our support boats.  Since this event, I have talked to a few people about what happened, and have decided that I will put pen to paper to detail what happened, how I was able to get myself in this position and what I would do in the future to ensure that I and others do not fall into the same trap.  I will communicate this to the group later.

Jamie & Bec have offered to coordinate our Juniors going to Westsail this year.  The passage below is from Jamie & Bec, so please have a good read.  As I mentioned in my previous newsletter, events like these boost confidence and skills and are well worth the time.

Westsail- expression of interest

Hi kids and parents,

Westsail and youth championships are coming up at Hillarys Yacht Club 26th September to 1st October (first week of school holidays).

The race organisers are open to adding an RS Feva Fleet however would need 4-5 boats in the class (preferably 6). Other clubs with Feva’s are also being invited.

Participants are expected to have minimum of green fleet experience (being comfortable racing Saturday afternoons or winter series would be a guide)

If you are interested please contact Jamie Wright (MOFSC) on 0421 677 332 or jamie.bec@gmail.com.   You will not be locked in but will give us a guide.

To enable people to plan participation please confirm interest by Monday 17th August.

MOFSC is likely to get a discount as we are a regional club.
